In the course of the next few days, he pieces together everything he knows about Eli. She doesn't go to school, she is indifferent to the cold, she must be afraid of the sun because she only goes out at night and has covered over the windows of her apartment, she can't eat any food, she drinks blood - and the blood-draining murders started when she and her father moved in! Having read books about various kinds of murders, he has a pretty good idea what kind of person his new girlfriend is, but he wants to be sure. He visits her in her apartment for the first time and asks her directly, "Are you a vampire?"
"I live off blood, yes."
Frightened by this revelation, he tells her that he has to leave her apartment so that he can distribute flyers to make some money. She shows him some valuable treasures she has collected and offers him money so that he doesn't have to leave. He now believes that she is responsible for all the murders that have taken place since her arrival and that she has stolen the money and the other treasures from the people she killed. Horrified, he runs out of her apartment.
One evening, Oskar hears his doorbell ring. It's Eli. "You have to invite me in," she says.
Oskar knows that a vampire cannot enter the home of her prospective victim unless she has been invited in. Out of curiosity, he asks, "What happens if you come in without being invited?" She takes a step into his apartment. Soon, blood begins to ooze from her face and body. He can't stand to see her suffer, and his pity for her restores some of the love he so recently felt for her, but he hasn't forgotten that she is a murderess.
