Oskar's love for Eli overcomes his self-preservation instinct. He steps between Lacke and the window, brandishes his knife and yells "No!" Rather than take on two enemies at once, Lacke retreats back into the bathroom and continues trying to shake Eli off him. Oskar closes the bathroom door and replaces the blanket on the window. Some time later, Eli emerges from the bathroom covered with blood. She thanks Oskar and then announces that she must leave this area immediately if she is to survive, now that the neighbours have started hunting for her. And then, her lips still smeared with her latest victim's blood, she gives Oskar a goodbye kiss on the lips, and they part company. Oskar misses her terribly, but he consoles himself with the thought that he no longer has any reason to fear being murdered. Furthermore, Conny and his friends are unlikely to be bothering him any more, and with his newfound popularity, he expects to begin living a normal life.
